How we evaluate robot vacuums

The Good Housekeeping Institute's Cleaning Laboratory has been evaluating vacuum cleaners for more than a century. Employing uniform methods created by theInternational Electrotechnical Commission and ASTM International, We spent almost 300 hours testing 15 robot vacuums, gathering a total of 405 data points to rate each model.. Each robot vacuum is allowed 10 minutes to clean, and the amount of debris collected is measured by weight. For straight-line pickup tests on carpet, an enclosed space is used containing a combination of potting soil, sand, and rayon fibers to mimic pet hair. After a specific cleaning duration, the dustbin is weighed to assess the quantity of debris gathered.

Obstacle pickup tests take place in both areas of our testing enclosure, where a combination of oatmeal, orzo, baking soda, and sand is spread around. The robots are required to move beneath a couch and coffee table, traverse an area rug, and go through a doorway to gather the debris. Once cleaning is complete, we determine the pickup percentage by weighing the dustbin to find out how much debris was collected.
