The Wordle answer for today's game (number 1478) is…ATRIA.
Hello, and welcome to the newest edition of "The NYT Has Added a Word, and It's Unnecessarily Obscure."
ATRIA wasn't a term I had come across or used before. I'm familiar with "atrium," of course—I know what that refers to. And I suppose I've heard the word "atrial," like in the context of "atrial fibrillation." But ATRIA as a standalone word was new to me.
It's also, naturally, a plural — something Wordle typically doesn't include. However, to clarify, the game generally avoids only those plurals formed by adding an S (or ES) at the end. Other forms of plurals appear to be acceptable. For example, FUNGI was the correct answer for puzzle #439.
Even knowing that ATRIA is a valid word, you still might not anticipate encountering it.
I wasn't, so I ended up with a four instead of what could have been a three. That’s annoying since the average score today is 3.9, and it would have been good to bring my score below that—especially considering how many bad games I've had recently.
I’m amazed that ATRIA doesn’t have a better average, but it’s likely been dragged down because STARE offered just one possible answer, resulting in an automatic score of two—assuming, of course, that people actually thought of it, which isn’t certain.
I went with STARE as my second move, following my first guess of OUTGO, which had narrowed the possibilities down to 357. I made a brilliant (or fortunate) choice, as it instantly reduced the list to just one remaining option.
The only issue was that it never crossed my mind, so instead I spent 15 minutes fumbling through various letter combinations trying to figure out what the answer might be.
Eventually, confused, I gave up and entered ACRID. I suspected it wasn't correct, but I reasoned that a vowel needed to come before my green T, so I'd test A in that spot and also try the I.
ACRID presented me with a green A at the beginning, a green R in the center, and also a green I – indicating that the solution must be ATRI- – and yet, you'd think I would have caught on by then. But no, it required several more minutes of experimenting with different letters before I concluded that ATRIA was a far better fit than options like ATRIP, ATRIM, or ATRIK, any of which could have technically worked. Ultimately, I figured it out on the fourth try. What an odd game.

The solution to yesterday's Wordle puzzle (game #1477) was…BALER.
Some days, you can tell right away that people are going to have a hard time as soon as they see the solution. Yesterday was definitely one of those days.
I mean, really, BALER! BALER?BALERWhen was the last time you used that word in a sentence? Have you...everHave you used that word in a sentence before? I’m fairly certain I haven’t.
Naturally, there are some individuals who will use BALER frequently—primarily farmers. I'm not sure what portion of Wordlers also fall into the farming category. It's likely a small percentage, however, given that this Wordle answer has an average guess rate of 4.7.
Typically, that would classify it as the toughest game of the week—but POPPY, just three days ago, held a 4.8 rating, so BALER doesn't quite reach that level.
It's still a challenging one, as is typical for most ER games. The letters are mostly common ones—or rather, four of them are, since B is only moderately common. Still, it ranks as the third most probable letter to begin an answer, which always catches me off guard. But if you're skeptical, take a look at myexamination of each Wordle solution – it's true!
I got a four, so I'm much happier compared to POPPY, though I did catch a bit of luck with my starting word. My first word was CLAMP, which gave me a yellow L and A. Sure, there were still 138 possibilities left—but it got me moving in the right direction. Then, when I played STEAL next, I also found an E.
I now had three yellow letters, with few options left for arranging them. According to WordleBot, there were 24 possible words remaining, but by playing LARGE next, I narrowed it down to just one. I’ll admit I was fortunate—it could have still been a four-letter puzzle if the tiles had aligned differently—but I figured I was owed a bit of luck. Hopefully, you had some as well.

What is Wordle?
If you're viewing this page, you likely already know what Wordle is and may have been playing it for some time. Even if you haven't played, you've probably at least heard of it by now, as it became a global word game sensation in 2022 and remains popular through 2025.
We have a complete guide to the game available on our site. What is Wordlepage, but if you're looking for a quick recap, here's the essential information.
What is Wordle?
Wordle presents a daily challenge where you try to guess a new five-letter word. You have six attempts, each of which provides additional clues. If a letter in your guess is correct and positioned properly, it appears green. If the letter is part of the answer but misplaced, it shows up yellow. Any letter not in the word at all turns gray. Seems straightforward, right?
It is played online through theWordle websiteor the New York Times' Games application (iOS / Androidand it's completely free.
Importantly, the solution is identical for all players each day, so you're up against the global community instead of just yourself or the game. The puzzle refreshes daily at midnight based on your local time, offering a fresh challenge and an opportunity to keep your streak alive.
How does Wordle work? What are the guidelines for playing Wordle? Can you explain the rules of Wordle? What are the gameplay instructions for Wordle? What are the basic rules of Wordle?
The rules of Wordle are fairly simple, though they come with a few unexpected twists to keep things interesting.
1.Letters that are part of the solution and positioned correctly will appear in green.
2.Letters that appear in the answer but are positioned incorrectly will turn yellow.
3.Letters that aren't part of the correct answer will appear in gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5.Letters can be used multiple times. This means that if your guess contains two of the same letter, both might show as yellow, both as green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6.Every guess has to be a legitimate word from Wordle's dictionary. For example, you're not allowed to guess ABCDE.
7.You aren't required to keep correct letters in later guesses unless you're playing in Hard mode.
8.You get six attempts to figure out the Wordle.
9.You need to finish the daily Wordle by midnight in your local time zone.
10.All responses are sourced from Wordle's set of 2,309 possible answers. However…
11.Wordle allows a broader range of words for guesses, including around 10,000 possibilities. For example, you can enter a plural form like WORDS. While it won't be the correct answer (refer to point 4), Wordle will still accept it as a valid guess.
12.The New York Times has incorporated some of its own terms that weren't part of the original list of 2,309 solutions. Many more are expected to emerge in the coming years.
