Lunkerhunt Furenzy Mouse Review: Unleashing a New Topwater Beast for Largemouth Bass

The Excitement of a Surface Strike While Targeting Largemouth Bass

There's no greater excitement in bass fishing than witnessing a determined largemouth attack a topwater lure. Whether it's a popper gently twitched across a flat during the quiet early morning ora hollow body bait Making your way through a dense thicket of weeds in a top-tier back bay, the anticipation builds strongly as you eagerly await the sudden strike on the water's surface.

I really enjoyLifting largemouth bass from the overhead tangle of vegetation aboveand cushions. Working through this dense vegetation with a weedless lure is a key strategy for finding those concealed (and eager!) prize catches. Until now, a hollow-body frog was basically the sole choice for fishing in this type of cover. But everything shifted this year.

Make Way, Frog—A New Mouse Has Arrived in Town

The Furenzy MouseLunkerhunt elevates the hollow body topwater lure experience with an innovative mouse design that brings a new level of realism. What truly distinguishes this lure from other plastic-coated baits is the incorporation of AquaFur.

The Advantages of AquaFur for Topwater Bass Lures

Soft to the touch and giving the bait a lifelike appearance, this exclusive technology is a game changer for several reasons. Lunkerhunt states that when wet, the bait's fur retains up to 15% water. This adds weight to the lure, which enhances casting distance and accuracy for anglers. I can personally confirm this, as I was able to cast the Furenzy Mouse significantly farther than any standard hollow body frogs I've used before.

The AquaFur offers a pleasant textured surface, and when paired with the rough mouth of a largemouth bass, it should help keep the fish hooked for a longer period. (Considering how slippery a plastic frog feels, this feature definitely makes sense.) Lunkerhunt even attached a small sample of AquaFur to the side of the packaging, much like a scratch-and-sniff sticker, allowing you to feel it yourself while at the tackle shop.

Walk the Dog or Drag and Reel to Entice Those Topwater Strikes

The Furenzy Mouse's body design and weight distribution are ideal for mimicking the movement of a mouse scurrying across water while walking the dog. Adjusting to this rhythm was effortless for me, and watching the lure glide and bounce on the surface truly gives the impression of a tiny rodent desperately trying to make it to the shoreline.

I worked this bait through the slop and across the pads with ease. The body glides smoothly over vegetation, and I give it high marks for that performance.

Hooks Engineered for Catching Topwater Bass

This bait's double weedless hook has a distinct look and feel compared to most others I've used. The nano-coated hooks are extra slick and designed to sit snugly against the body. Additionally, the hook points are positioned just behind the mouse's ears, serving as an extra barrier to help deflect weeds and brush.

Lure of the Tail to Catch Bass

Each Furenzy Mouse features a soft rubber tail attached to its rear. Unlike the typical living rubber skirts designed to mimic frog legs, this single strand creates an appealing movement as the lure is retrieved through the water. When largemouth bass have been exposed to the same hollow body frogs repeatedly, offering something distinct and unconventional can lead to better results.

The proof lies in the topwater pudding.

On June 26th, I got the chance to test Lunkerhunt's Furenzy Mouse for the first time. Following a week of consistently hot weather, I took my boat out that afternoon to find cooler temperatures and gusty winds. I suspected it might be a challenging trip.

I swung the Furenzy Mouse around some open weed edges, hoping to see how the bait would perform. Standing on the front deck, everything seemed to be going well. After successfully working through a few walk-the-dog retrieves, I set out to find some shoreline slop.

I started fishing in a stretch of slop that was shaded by a dense overhead canopy of trees. The slop was suspended just above three feet of water, and the thick branches and leaves provided added cover. I cast the mouse lure right up next to the shoreline and began slowly reeling and dragging it back toward me. It hadn’t moved more than 7 feet when the slop erupted with a powerful strike. After a few intense minutes battling the fish, I successfully netted the four-pounder.

I caught a few more fish on the Furenzy Mouse before the wind and an approaching rainstorm eventually forced me to leave the river.

A week later, I returned to the river to carry on with my on-the-water testing of this new topwater lure. The conditions were much better this time, with the day starting off calm and sunny—exactly the type of weather I prefer when fishing heavy cover using hollow body baits.

I spent several hours casting the Furenzy Mouse to sloppy mats and lily pad fields. Both areas produced quite a few fish (along with a handful of thrilling surface strikes!) and every largemouth that attacked was hooked securely. I even had one bass dart out about ten feet from a solitary pad bed to inhale the mouse in open water with one massive gulp—it was awesome to see.

Lunkerhunt's Furenzy Mouse Offers Multiple Choices

The Furenzy Mouse comes in three sizes and eight colors, providing anglers with a broad selection of bait options to choose from.

Select from sizes of 2" (3/8oz), 2.5" (1/2oz), and 3" (3/4oz), along with these color choices: brown, black, white, grey, chipmunk, red squirrel, bubblegum, and chartreuse.

Is the Lunkerhunt Furenzy Mouse an Effective Topwater lure for catching Largemouth Bass?

In one word—definitely. I thoroughly enjoyed using this new hollow body lure for catching largemouth bass. The features that convinced me were the extended casting range, its outstanding ability to avoid weeds (not once did I get snagged), and the strong, high-quality hooks and hookset performance.
