On June 26th, I got the chance to test Lunkerhunt's Furenzy Mouse for the first time. Following a week of consistently hot weather, I took my boat out that afternoon to find cooler temperatures and gusty winds. I suspected it might be a challenging trip.
I swung the Furenzy Mouse around some open weed edges, hoping to see how the bait would perform. Standing on the front deck, everything seemed to be going well. After successfully working through a few walk-the-dog retrieves, I set out to find some shoreline slop.
I started fishing in a stretch of slop that was shaded by a dense overhead canopy of trees. The slop was suspended just above three feet of water, and the thick branches and leaves provided added cover. I cast the mouse lure right up next to the shoreline and began slowly reeling and dragging it back toward me. It hadn’t moved more than 7 feet when the slop erupted with a powerful strike. After a few intense minutes battling the fish, I successfully netted the four-pounder.
I caught a few more fish on the Furenzy Mouse before the wind and an approaching rainstorm eventually forced me to leave the river.
A week later, I returned to the river to carry on with my on-the-water testing of this new topwater lure. The conditions were much better this time, with the day starting off calm and sunny—exactly the type of weather I prefer when fishing heavy cover using hollow body baits.
I spent several hours casting the Furenzy Mouse to sloppy mats and lily pad fields. Both areas produced quite a few fish (along with a handful of thrilling surface strikes!) and every largemouth that attacked was hooked securely. I even had one bass dart out about ten feet from a solitary pad bed to inhale the mouse in open water with one massive gulp—it was awesome to see.
