Homeowner's Hell: Neighbor "Steals" Electricity, Cuts Off Water Supply

A woman found out that her neighbor had been illegally using electricity from her home after they had already argued over an unpaid water bill that resulted in their water being shut off.

The woman, who recently moved to a new city with her spouse and one-year-old child, shares a semi-detached house with the neighbor in question.

The theft of electricity was discovered when the 29-year-old homeowner noticed an extension cord plugged into their power source and running to the adjacent property.

The discovery came after an earlier disagreement in which their shared water meter was turned off because the neighbor hadn't paid her share of the bill, with one saying: "We didn’t make a big deal out of the water issue since it was quickly resolved and the service was restored the same day."

However, when the neighbor was confronted via text message about the electricity theft, they replied emotionally: "I'll unplug right away, and I'll come over to talk to you. It's been the worst week, and I don't know how much more I can handle."

She disclosed that she was experiencing serious financial hardships, saying: "My electricity bill amounts to $2000 because I went the entire year without covering all the costs on my own. I'm stuck and in about two hours, I’ll be sitting in the dark once more."

The neighbor stated that she would end up without a home if she didn't receive help and that her daughter was unwilling to assist her.

The homeowners conveyed their frustration in their reply, saying: "I feel like we've been considerate neighbors to you and would appreciate being treated the same way."

If you had just asked us out of respect, we would have been able to reach some kind of agreement.

We feel like you're taking advantage of us by using our electricity without asking, probably thinking we're just a naive young couple who wouldn't catch on.

The couple emphasized that they also had a young child to support, stating: "We get that you're raising a child, but we have a baby as well, and we're working hard to provide more for them."

The homeowners let their neighbor know that they would be bringing in property management to take care of the situation from now on.

The neighbor replied that she had felt "embarrassed" about seeking assistance and proposed $100 as reimbursement for the electricity that was taken.

The event generated intense responses once posted online, including a comment that read: "She boldly promoted it yet is too fearful to acknowledge her error. Rather than taking responsibility, she's complaining about how tough everything has been for her. What a coward."

Another individual noted: "This wasn't an accident. Her actions were intentional, and she had her emotional plea prepared to make the neighbor feel guilty and allow her to keep taking advantage."
