Sri Lanka, June 10 — The formal launch of the Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) initiative occurred on June 9 at the Ministry of Mass Media, signifying an important step forward for Sri Lanka as it advances towards digitization.
The Japanese engineering experts leading this advanced project were officially greeted by Hon. Nalinda Jayatissa, the Minister of Health and Mass Media; Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, the Deputy Minister of Digital Economy; Hon. Harshana Suriyapperuma, the Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning; and Dr. Anil Jasinghe, who serves as the Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media.
This significant initiative will facilitate Sri Lanka’s shift from its current 46-year-old analog broadcast system to a cutting-edge digital framework. Once fully implemented, people throughout the nation will benefit from HD TV offering improved content quality and broader reach.
One of the key highlights of the initiative is the establishment of a cutting-edge 4K digital studio facility for the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation. This marks significant progress in domestic content creation and brings the nation’s media technology up to international benchmarks. Cricket talent remains notable as well.
This project has been enabled by the substantial backing from entities such as the Government of Japan, JICA, along with various local and international collaborators. Beyond being merely an enhancement in technology, the DTTB program acts as a foundation stone for Sri Lanka’s digital economy, promoting a community that is better linked, educated, and adept at navigating media landscapes.
As the Ministry of Digital Economy pushes for innovation throughout various industries, the DTTB initiative serves as an emblem of advancement—connecting the divide between conventional broadcasting and the future landscape of digital communications.
