In partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy (FMCIDE), Meta has initiated the Llama Impact Accelerator Program aimed at promoting AI-based solutions across key sectors in Nigeria.
The eight-month initiative will back fledgling companies that are working on artificial intelligence advancements utilizing Meta’s open-source Llama models. The focus areas encompass Agriculture, Security & Safety, and Healthcare, with an additional wild card category designed for other significant use cases.
At the event kickoff, Sade Dada, who leads public policy for Anglophone West Africa at Meta, highlighted the project's significance in boosting Nigeria’s digital landscape. "We're excited to collaborate with FMCIDE in nurturing indigenous AI expertise," she stated. "Open-source AI must be readily available and aligned with our country's specific issues."
The initiative will start off with a six-week incubation phase, providing technical training and guidance from professionals in the field, succeeded by an additional six-month period of ongoing assistance, which includes utilization of technical resources.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. 'Bosun Tijani, praised the initiative as a "significant advancement" for Nigeria's artificial intelligence strategies. He emphasized, "Artificial Intelligence will play a crucial role in driving our nation's progress, and this program provides creators with the resources needed to address critical challenges."
The Llama Impact Accelerator supports Meta’s overarching objective of making responsible AI accessible to everyone, while also encouraging innovation in developing countries.
Working alongside academic and governmental partners, this initiative aims to quicken the pace of Nigeria’s AI sector development and foster significant progress.
