According to a new rumor, Amazon might bring a foldable laptop.
Saying that this is out of left field would be an understatement; it’s out of a completely different baseball field. Amazon does have a selection of devices on the market, but they’re not what you’d call technical marvels. It has its Fire tablets, Kindle ebook readers, and Echo devices. However, people mostly associate it with being a massive online store.
Amazon might be working on a foldable laptop
Even though this news is from an extremely reputable source, you’ll want to take it cautiously. We’re still dealing with super early information, and anything could happen between now and the official launch. That reputable source is Ming-Chi Kuo. He uploaded a decent-sized post to X talking about the device.
According to the post, Amazon is in the very beginning stages of developing the device. So, it could still be nothing more than sketches, blueprints, and hopeful dreams. Kuo states that development on the device “ has not yet officially kicked off .” If Amazon does follow through with the device, we shouldn’t expect to see anything from it for several years. “ If development progresses as planned, it is projected to enter mass production in late 2026 or 2027 .”
If things progress smoothly, we won't witness it reaching the market before 2028. It’s intriguing to speculate about how the laptop and foldable device sectors might evolve over the next few years. By then, the market for foldable laptops may well become much more common. We do know that Amazon will operate without direct rivalry from Apple since Apple is not anticipated to commence large-scale manufacturing of its foldable laptop until at least late 2028.
So many questions remain
Currently, there's no details available regarding the foldable laptop since Amazon is still developing it. This announcement comes as quite a shock because jumping directly from their top-tier Fire tablets to a foldable laptop represents a significant technological advancement. It would have been more expected for Amazon to begin with a conventional laptop instead.
Additionally, it's uncertain what approach the company might take regarding the software. It would be prudent to opt for Windows and then install some Amazon-specific features on top of it. Nevertheless, reports suggest that Amazon may develop their own proprietary operating system for their devices, potentially phasing out Android altogether.
