Airbnb Taps Anti-Party Tech to Crack Down on Summer Rentals Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Airbnb is reintroducing its "anti-party" measures to stop unruly group events from happening at its properties.

This special system Is part of the platform's larger initiative to encourage secure and courteous accommodations during busy holiday weekends like Memorial Day, Independence Day, Halloween, and New Year’s Eve.

When visitors attempt to make reservations on Airbnb, the platform employs more than 100 distinct indicators to identify whether they intend to host a gathering. This comprehensive approach aims at safeguarding communities and maintaining tranquility for local inhabitants.

Resident Acacia Hernandez, who resides close to multiple short-term rentals in Mission Beach, mentioned that big crowds frequently assemble on weekends.

I anticipate massive crowds over the coming Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends," Acacia stated. "Things will likely get quite hectic.

To minimize the likelihood of gatherings, Airbnb’s technology highlights specific booking patterns, like reservations for one to two nights in whole properties, particularly those booked spontaneously or by individuals residing closeby.

"If potential guests want to reserve a place within one to three miles of their home, this could trigger certain alerts," stated Emilie Simons, who represents Airbnb as a spokesperson.

When a reservation is marked as high risk, travelers are rerouted to accommodations deemed safer.

"Instead, they could be guided towards booking a room, or multiple rooms, or even a studio," explained Simons.

For four years in a row, Airbnb has utilized this technology over the Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends. According to the company, it has had a noticeable effect.

It's crucial to understand that the occurrence of such events is already exceedingly rare," Simons stated. "In California, it stands at less than 0.06%.

In 2024, Airbnb stated that approximately 51,000 individuals nationwide were prevented from reserving whole-home listings during these two holidays. Among them, more than 7,000 were located in California, with about 350 being residents of San Diego.

We understand that ultimately, we may be seen as killjoys," Simons stated. "However, this is entirely for the sake of safety and making sure that Airbnb keeps serving and bolstering their communities.

This anti-party system functions alongside Airbnb’s standard screening procedures and global party ban.

"Frankly, it’s quite excellent because fostering safety allows the locals to unwind and truly savor their moments at the seaside," Acacia stated.

If a guest believes their booking was incorrectly flagged, Airbnb said they can contact customer support for review. There's also always support lines available for guests, hosts and neighbors. Airbnb also offers free noise sensors and other tips for hosts to keep their properties safe and party-free.
