The America Party Follows the Musk Playbook

If Elon Musk were ever required to compose a cover letter, he might express that he is the type of leader who recognizes a significant issue and immediately takes steps to address it — no matter the challenges.

He is not lying. It is one of his key characteristics as a business leader.

Musk has a lengthy background of establishing and directing businesses aimed at solving problems he believes require attention. The most recent instance is his declaration over the weekend that he is proceeding with plans to form a new political party, theAmerica Partyfor the "80% in the middle," to overcome the deadlock created by the two-party system in the United States.

Musk has a pattern of recognizing a problem and focusing on it as the solution, even if he isn't necessarily the most appropriate person for the task, Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a leadership professor at the Yale School of Management, told BI.

"That's the Musk approach," he stated.

Musk did not promptly reply to a request for input from Business Insider.

While Musk's America Party is his reaction to President Donald Trump'sexpansive spending bill, which is expected to increase the national deficit and which Musk has frequently condemned, he previously characterized his new party as one that would advocate for voters located in the center of the political spectrum.

The American Party is not Musk's first ambitious endeavor

Overcoming the two-party structure is a challenging task. No prior efforts have been successful. Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive Party received 27% of the votes in 1912, and Ross Perot secured 19% of the vote in 1992 as an independent before establishing the Reform Party for his 1996 campaign.

However, Musk is not someone who avoids challenges.

"Whenever something is significant enough, you take action, even when the chances are not on your side," Musk stated to "60 Minutes" in 2012.

OpenAI's Sam Altman, with whom Musk is currently involved in alegal battle, has expressed it differently.

"Elon is urgently hoping the world gets rescued. However, only on his terms," Altman mentioned in a 2023 interview.

When difficulties occur at one ofMusk's companies, he "puts everything on the line," Andy Wu, an associate professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, previously told BI.

Musk established SpaceX ten years prior, undoubtedly his most daring endeavor, pouring $100 million from his personal wealth into the venture even though he had no background in aerospace engineering. In 2006, prior to becoming CEO, he stated that he was supporting the company to "speed up the transition from a mine-and-burn hydrocarbon economy to a solar electric economy." Although Musk went on to establish the most successful electric vehicle company globally, it has faced challenges recently due to Musk's involvement with government affairs affecting the brand.confounded investors.

Even SpaceX, the company Musk established in 2017 to create underground transportation tunnels, originated from Musk's annoyance with Los Angeles traffic.

Acquiring Twitter was a part of Musk's "fight for the future of civilization"

Musk's purchase of Twitter in 2022 was a significant move — specifically, a $44 billion deal — aimed at tackling another challenging problem Musk considered crucial.

Amid the pandemic and civil rights protests, Musk expressed concern that the right to free speech was under threat. Acquiring Twitter was his response.

This is a fight for the future of society," he stated on Twitter in 2022 following its acquisition, half a year prior to renaming it X. "If free expression is lost even in America, oppression will be the only outcome.

Musk has also expressed worries regarding the future of artificial intelligence. He'swent to war with OpenAI CEO Sam Altmanregarding the company's focus on its mission, which Musk contributed to shaping as a founding member: to create artificial general intelligence that serves human benefit. Musk views AGI as a critical risk, and mentioned it is one of the reasons he established xAI, the firm behind the Grok chatbot, in 2023.

I'm going to begin a project that I refer to as TruthGPT, or a highly truth-oriented AI designed to explore the essence of the universe," Musk stated to Fox News in 2023, mentioning that xAI "could be the most effective route to security" which would be "unlikely to destroy humanity.

Artificial intelligence is also a key part of his rationale for establishing Neuralink, a company that develops brain implants allowing humans to connect with computers. The device is currently being tested and is being used by a small number of disabled individuals, who utilize it to communicate more effectively, control computers, or engage in video gaming. Musk has mentioned that the capability for humans to directly interface with machines can help maintain human oversight over AI.

He mentioned during a 2021 podcast interview that he founded Neuralink "to specifically tackle the AI symbiosis issue, which I believe poses an existential risk."

Musk's political problem-solving

Musk might not be able to use the same approach for tackling major political issues, according to Sonnenfeld, a Yale professor and founder of Yale's Chief Executive Leadership Institute.

"He excels as a technology innovator and business leader, but struggles with turnarounds and has shown a clumsy approach to governance, at times being outright offensive," Sonnenfeld stated.

Through his work at the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk aimed to reduce what he called fraudulent or unnecessary expenses. The group's initiatives to cut costs led to significant job losses across federal agencies — measures that faced criticism from certain members of the political left.

In the spring, Musk mentioned that DOGE had been useful, but not as much as he had anticipated. The budget reductions achieved so far have not met the original goal of reducing federal spending by $2 trillion.

Indications suggest that Musk, who has drawn backing from individuals like Mark Cuban for his new party initiatives, is considering a cautious strategy in his latest political endeavor.

Musk stated on Sunday that although the America Party might explore "supporting a presidential candidate" in the future, its primary attention "for the next 12 months will be on the House and the Senate."

Sonnenfeld mentioned that Musk seems to lack the abilities and diplomatic skills required to establish his party, noting that the response from numerous investors and consumers to his political initiatives has been"overwhelmingly negative."

"He's a gifted technologist and an entrepreneur who believes he has no boundaries — yet he does," Sonnenfeld said.
